Jarvis Christian College is proud to announce that its Criminal Justice Program has been ranked one of the Top 50 Correctional Officer Programs in the country and the Top Ranked Corrections/Criminal Justice Program in the State of Texas (of 103 total programs analyzed), by website correctionalofficer.org,
The mission of the Jarvis Christian College Criminal Justice Department is to provide students with broad-based learning experiences in law enforcement and the American judicial system. By emphasizing the development of students’ analytical and critical thinking skills, the Criminal Justice Program prepares students for careers in law enforcement and the criminal justice system. Jarvis provides real world, experiential activities for students majoring in criminal justice to include site visits to law enforcement agencies, courthouses, graduate schools and law schools, and opportunities to interact with and shadow local law enforcement officials, court officials, and attorneys.
“Our faculty has the experience and credentials in the law enforcement arena to ensure that our students are well prepared for mid-level careers in law enforcement and are capable of making an immediate impact when hired into a new law enforcement position. Our faculty and college have established relationships with law enforcement professionals and law enforcement organizations that create invaluable opportunities for our students and, in addition, we offer pre-professional chapters on our campus, as well,” stated Calvin B. Lester, Jr., Lead Professor of Criminal Justice at Jarvis Christian College.
Nine (9) criminal justice majors were awarded degrees during this small college’s May 2015 commencement ceremony, representing 14 percent of the overall graduating class. In the past three years at Jarvis, there have been 34 criminal justice graduates. The College plans to expand and enhance the award-winning program in order to attract an even larger number of outstanding students seeking knowledge and preparation for entry into the Criminal Justice profession.

Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) Officially Reaffirms Jarvis’ Accreditation
Hawkins, TX – Jarvis Christian College is pleased to announce that the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) has officially reaffirmed the College’s accreditation. Jarvis completed the process and had its site visit last October 2014. The College received no recommendations requiring further reporting and no follow-up to its Compliance Certification Document. On June 13th, an official announcement was made stating that Jarvis Christian College’s accreditation was reaffirmed.
The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges is the regional body for the accreditation of degree-granting higher
education institutions in the Southern states. Jarvis Christian College is accredited to award degrees by SACSCOC. The reaffirmation process occurs every ten (10) years. As part of this process, institutions prepare an extensive Compliance Certification Report documenting commitment/compliance to the SACSCOC Principles of Accreditation. The institution also prepares a Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) to improve a specific aspect of its educational program. Jarvis’ plan is JSTAR, JarvisStudents TAckling Reading. These documents are reviewed by representatives of peer institutions, culminating with a site visit by a visiting team.
Dr. Lester C. Newman, Jarvis Christian College’s president, said this regarding the SACSCOC Reaffirmation, “The favorable review of the College’s academic programs and administrative functions is an endorsement of the value that Jarvis is delivering to its students. In the judgement of our peers, Jarvis Christian College is fiscally sound and well positioned for quality improvement as the institution continues to meet an important mission in higher education. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the faculty, staff, Board of Trustees, alumni and consultants who assisted the College in its effort to maintain its accreditation. They are to be commended for their hard work and dedication.”

On March 19, accomplished Journalist George E. Curry delivered the Convocation speech to Jarvis Students.
On March 20, Jarvis held a Career & Graduate School Fair with 40 vendors and a large number of professionally dressed and prepared college students there for them to meet and talk with.
Today, March 21, will be a J. N. Ervin Lecture. The lecture commemorates Jarvis’s founders. Dr. Doug Skinner, a former Jarvis Board member and recipient of an Honorary degree from Jarvis will deliver the speech, “The Idea of a Christian College.”
Friday, March 22, the College will host a Comedy Show and a concert for Jarvis students and students from nearby colleges. The event will feature Artist Roscoe Dash and Comedians Ali Siddiq and Michael Colyar.
Saturday, March 23, at 9 AM, Jarvis will begin the President’s Inaugural Scholarship 5K Run/Walk, an event that promotes movement as a way to combat obesity. Participation is expected from a large number of families and individuals from the community.
East Texas Natural History Museum on the Jarvis Campus will have an open house from 8 AM to 5 PM. The museum is currently featuring an art exhibit. The artist/photographer will be on hand to discuss his work. This event is free.

HAWKINS, TEXAS – Peruvian Botanist and Explorer John Janovec will speak at Jarvis Christian College Saturday, February 9, 2013, at 7:00 p.m. at the East Texas Natural History Museum on the Jarvis campus.
Janovec was leader of the Botanical Research Institute’s Andes to the Amazon Biodiversity program until 2012. He is now botanist with the Universidad Nacional Agraria la Monlina in Lima, Peru. He will come to Jarvis to speak to students and others about his work.
“This will be especially relevant to anyone interested in Peru or hoping to go there since Dr. Janovec has led over 50 tours, classes and scientific expeditions in the deserts, rainforests and high Andes of the amazing country of Peru,” explained Dr. Will Godwin curator and the individual responsible for bringing Dr. Janovec to Jarvis Christian College.
