The Devilettes (25-30) won its eighth SWAC Tournament title in the last 10 years Saturday following an 11-3 victory over Alabama State at Wilson Morgan Park. It marks the second straight year that MVSU has claimed the title.
MVSU will find out during Sunday NCAA Selection Show about who and when they will face in the NCAA Softball Tournament. The show is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. CST on ESPNU.
Senior shortstop Alexandria Robertson earned SWAC Tournament MVP while catcher Nicole Burr and pitcher Alicia Lorenz were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Valley racked up 11 hits – scoring in six out of seven innings — and took advantage of four ASU errors. Valley scored in each of the first four innings of the game, including three in the first and four in the seventh. Yasmin Battle paced the Devilettes with four hits while Burr, who hit a solo homerun, added three hits and four RBIs and runs.
Kimberly Spivey (9-9) earned the win, allowed two earned runs on two hits with three walks in three innings of work. Lorenz pitched in relief, allowing five hits and no earned runs with five strikeouts.
After falling to Prairie View in the opening day of the tournament, Valley won five straight games en route to the title. The Devilettes defeated Alcorn State, Texas Southern and upended Prairie View twice Friday.
