Bowie State University, located in Bowie, Md., is the 2016 March School of the Month.

Maryland’s oldest historically black college or university founded in 1865, Bowie State is one of the region’s top comprehensive universities providing students with a high-quality education in a variety of in-demand fields. Bowie State is ranked the state’s best value school by The Economist and among the top 25 HBCUs by U.S. News & World Report.

Bowie State is a leader in education in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields (STEM). The university is one of Maryland’s top five universities graduating African-Americans with bachelor’s degrees in biology and the computer science field (Diverse). Bowie State’s cyber security programs are recognized by the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security as models of excellence.

Throughout March, the University will be recognized on the nationally syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show and receive those funds raised from listeners, alumni and other interested parties that month. The show, aired in 115 markets around the country, reaches nearly eight million listeners every week. The Tom Joyner Foundation has raised in excess of $65 million since 1998 to support more than 29,000 students attending historically black colleges and universities.

Notable alumni include: Toni Braxton, Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter; Eunique Jones Gibson, creator of the “Because of Them, We Can” social media photography campaign; and Christa McAuliffe, teacher-astronaut killed in the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster.
