Bartley becomes the winningest women’s basketball coach in the HBCU history

January 17, 2013 by sarterbery

Jan. 14, 2013 – After the Fort Valley State University Lady Wildcats defeated the Stillman College Lady Tigers, 85-71 on Saturday, Jan. 12, FVSU Head Women’s Basketball Coach Lonnie Bartley became the Winningest Coach in the History of HBCU Women’s Basketball.  The win was Bartley’s 624th, all at FVSU, as he surpassed former Claflin University Head Coach, the late Nelson Brownlee, for the top honor.

For Bartley, reaching the milestone was not about him. Instead, it was about advancing his alma mater, FVSU. “While any coach would be happy with breaking a record of this magnitude,” said Bartley, “what I am most happy about is the [acclaim] such an accomplishment brings to FVSU. I am grateful to this school for giving me the chance to become a head coach and for its unwavering commitment to the Women’s Basketball Program. I also want to thank every player who has played for me over my 29 years as coach. Each of these players has a played a role in the success of the program.”
