Wiley College, located in Marshall, Texas, has been named the Tom Joyner Foundation ‘School of the Month’ for February.

Founded in 1873, Wiley is one of the oldest historically black colleges west of the Mississippi River.  The institution is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Wiley has been ranked as one of the best values among the 320 comprehensive colleges ranked within four regions: North, South, Midwest, and West (U.S. News & World Report), ranked in the western region for highest acceptance rate among comprehensive colleges offering baccalaureate degrees, as well as having the largest percentage of alumni donors.

The College is also noted for its debate team, which was the subject of the movie, The Great Debaters, which also won national acclaim.  Wiley was a leader in establishing the presence of “Divine Nine” organizations in the Southwest.  In 1915, the Beta Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated was formed, the second chapter in the United States.

As one of the Tom Joyner Foundation ‘Schools of the Month’, each school will be promoted on the Tom Joyner Morning Show and receive those funds raised from listeners, alumni and other interested parties that month.  The show, aired in 115 markets around the country, reaches nearly eight million listeners every week.

Notable alumni include: Lois Towles, internationally renowned concert pianist; James Wheaton, actor, director, educator; Thelma Dewitty, the first African American teacher hired by the Seattle Public Schools; and Mike Lewis, NFL player.

Alumni, friends and supporters of HBCUs are encouraged to support the Wildcats!
