The Tom Joyner Foundation is recognizing Wilberforce University in Wilberforce, Ohio, as the February 2013 School of the Month.
The foundation, formed by the nationally syndicated radio personality, chose Wilberforce as part of its on-going effort to assist these institutions in broadening and strengthening their efforts to raise money to help keep students attending HBCUs.
As one of the Tom Joyner Foundation ‘Schools of the Month’, each school will be promoted by the Tom Joyner Morning Show and receive those funds raised from listeners, alumni and other interested parties that month. The show, aired in 115 markets around the country, reaches nearly eight million listeners every week.
Wilberforce University was founded in 1856 by members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, which makes it the nation’s oldest private, historically black university. Wilberforce was named in honor of the great 18th century abolitionist, William Wilberforce. The original Wilberforce closed its doors in 1862 but on July 10, 1863, the university was newly incorporated.
Wilberforce offers some 20 fully accredited liberal arts concentrations to students in business, communications, computing and engineering sciences, humanities, natural sciences and social sciences. Dual degree programs are offered in areas such as architecture and nuclear engineering.
Today, Wilberforce University continues to build on its sacred tradition. Wilberforce continues to attract and produce scholars as well as successful efforts have been made towards its programs and outreach. It’s mission “to help our students identify and prepare for their respective purposes in life as global citizens by imparting knowledge, instilling discipline and inspiring lifelong learning through critical inquiry, personal and spiritual development and practical application” has provided the foundation for Wilberforce to succeed.
