UAPB’s Nationally Recognized Ensemble: The Vesper Choir

June 29, 2018 by Tom Joyner Foundation

The Vesper Choir is a service organization that performs at events on campus and in the community, schools, churches, and for community organizations. The traditional college choir travels to perform a repertoire from diverse stylistic periods around the state of Arkansas and internationally. The selections include classical choral literature, spirituals, contemporary choral literature, choral jazz and gospel.

Since its organization by Ariel M. Lovelace in 1946, the choir’s mission has been rooted in culture, art, and education. Now under the direction of Dr. Michael J. Bates, Professor of Music, the Vesper Choir is nationally recognized among HBCUs for its diversity and perfection. A lot of great talent has come from Vesper, including Dr. H. Beecher Hicks, prominent theologian, pastor and author; Smokie Norful, Grammy award-winning contemporary gospel artist and pastor; and the late James McKissic, internationally renowned concert pianist.
