Tuskegee University joins with community groups to feed minds and bodies

TUSKEGEE, Ala. (June 17, 2013) — During the summer, all eligible K-12 children registered in the Super Summer Programs, will get nutritious meals and take part in several recreational activities. The program will serve Macon County children at four sites: District IV Community Center, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and Washington Chapel AME Church in Tuskegee and Maranatha SDA Church in Montgomery, Ala.

Tuskegee University first lady Patricia Saul Rochon volunteered to serve as a sponsor for the program. The university will provide meals and oversight to the community partners, and a trained site supervisor who will ensure the quality and safety of the meals and snacks served. Funding for the food service portion originated in the United States Department of Agriculture. The Alabama State Department of Education Childhood Nutrition Program administers the program. All children living in Macon County this summer are eligible for the meals. Income guidelines and eligibility forms are available through the site supervisor.

“Participating in the Summer Food Service Program is a wonderful way to help children in the county,” Patricia Rochon said in a statement released by State of Alabama Department of Education. “Tuskegee University is an integral part of the community, and the university’s sponsorship of the program is just an extension of its cooperative spirit.Summer
