#TJFWHM18: Mary-Pat Hector, Community Organizer, Denny’s Ambassador & Spelman College Student

March 26, 2018 by Cherie S. White

When most of us were Mary-Pat Hector’s age, our biggest priorities were studying and partying, and not necessarily in that order. But for Hector, one of her main priorities is eliminating food insecurity on her college campus and community.

Late last year, Mary-Pat, some of her Spelman sisters and brothers from Morehouse College, began a hunger strike to change a policy that they believed hindered them from donating their unused food credits to fellow classmates who may be going hungry. Read more about the hunger strike here.

Mary-Pat’s work gained her the 2017 Denny’s Hungry for Education scholarship. This scholarship awarded Mary-Pat $2,000 and an additional $2,000 to implement her program to end hunger in her HBCU community.

We’re honored to feature Mary-Pat Hector, leader, activist and inspiration to young women everywhere!
