Dorothy Vaughn– “I changed what I could and what I couldn’t, I endured”

  • First African-American woman to supervise a group of staff at (NACA) NASA’s Langley Research Center.

The group she supervised was comprised of all African American women, who performed their complex mathematical problems by hand. The process earned them the title “Human Computers”.

The ladies were required to work in segregated conditions as NACA, at the time, required them to use separate dining and restroom facilities. 

  • She worked at NASA for 28 years, retiring in 1971. She commuted to work daily using Hampton’s public transportation system.
