#TJFBHM18 Ruth Bolden, Stillman Alum, Civil Rights Worker & Library Founder

We salute Ruth Bolden, an alumna of Stillman College. This civil rights worker & library founder received her master’s degree in library science from Atlanta University. Bolden opened a library in 1948 in the local community center in West Tuscaloosa and secured funding for a new library in 1961.

She was member of the Tuscaloosa Citizens Action Committee, which helped register blacks to vote. Bolden was also among those who were tear gassed in the First African Baptist Church during the planning of a civil rights march on June 9, 1964.
