Born to a teen mother in Apopka, Florida, Brown was raised by his grandparents. Determined to educate their grandson so he would not have to perform manual labor in local citrus groves, they bought him a typewriter and typing lessons.
In high school, Brown was a top performer, graduating with honors from integrated Allentown High School. Brown had no thoughts of attending college until the white owner of a local casket company paid for his college education. Although he never met her, this act of kindness instilled in Brown the spirit of philanthropy, which he continues to embrace today.
After attending Howard and earning his electrical engineering degree, Brown went on to work as a defense contrator and designed computer circuits at IBM.
Brown earned his master’s degree in electrical engineering at New York University and became intrigued with finance and investing. He eventually went on to make a career in investing, working for Irwin Management and T. Rowe Price. Ten years after leaving T. Rowe Price, Brown started Brown Capital Management out of his Baltimore home. Brown Capital Management caters to high net-worth individuals, pension and profit sharing plans, charitable organizations and corporations.
Brown and his wife, Sylvia, created the Eddie C. and C. Sylvia Brown Family Foundation and has donated over $5 million to the Turning the Corner Achievement Program, which supports inner-city Baltimore youths.
