One might wonder what motivated me to come to Job Corps. It was not an easy decision and likely one of the hardest decisions in my life. After departing from Cuba, the country where I was born and raised, with the purpose of searching for a better life, I set a goal that no matter how hard or insurmountable life may look, I would succeed. Growing up in a poor country such as Cuba taught me to value the small stuff. The first hard decision was leaving my family and everything that I had behind to start a new chapter of my life. Having my family’s support motivates and inspires me to be a better person, both for them and myself.

I decided to participate in the Gary Job Corps College Pathways Program to accomplish my goal by gaining the knowledge and skill that would help me in this country to become the person I want to be. This opportunity has allowed me to improve my second language, English, gain a certification in a career, obtain a U.S. high school diploma, and attend college free of charge. What more could I ask for?
