New Scholarship Helps Students Committed To Making A Difference

FORT WORTH, JULY 30, 2013–In the wake of the national discussionregarding race relations and social justice following a high-profile Florida case, OCG PR (Open Channels Group) and Paul Quinn College (PQC) announced today the creation of a new scholarship fund called the OCG PR Scholarship for Social Justice in memory of Trayvon Martin, which will award a student in Paul Quinn College’s Legal Studies program with a $7,500 scholarship.

OCG PR is Fort Worth-based public relations agency that is recognized as a national leader in multicultural communications. Paul Quinn College (PQC) is a private, faith-based, four-year liberal arts college and is one of the nation’s 106 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The idea for the scholarship emerged from a conversation between PQC President Michael J. Sorrell and OCG PR CEO Tonya Veasey about multicultural issues, following the national dialogue and tensions surrounding the Trayvon Martin case. Both Veasey and Sorrell view the scholarship as an opportunity to help studentscommitted to entering a career in social justice and bringing multicultural communities together.

“As a multicultural public relations firm, OCG PR is proud to help create this scholarship fund that will assist some young person in earning a college degree in a field that will focus on solving our nation’s divisive racial and social justice issues,” said Veasey, a PQC alumna.  “Our hope is that support for the scholarship fund will come from others who want to see an end to these problems that divide our communities.”

“We are grateful for Tanya and OCG PR’s supportin bringingthe Social Justice Scholarship to fruition,” PresidentSorrell said. “Our institutional ethos is ‘WE over Me.’ and we teach our students that they have an obligation to raise their voices for the voiceless.  This scholarship will help them amplify their voices.”

$5,000 of the scholarship will come from OCG PR and $2,500 will be provided by Paul Quinn College.  To be eligible for the award, students that enter must be juniors or seniors and possess a minimum 3.0 GPA.Applications for this scholarship will be taken starting this fall.
