Nicholas McDonald, a senior at Norfolk State University, has been named this week’s Tom Joyner Foundation “Hercules Scholar”. At Norfolk State University Nicholas is majoring in Mass communication and is recognized as an honor student with a 3.72 GPA .
Nicholas uses his time on campus not only in the classroom but also with the NSU Television Station. His work with the school’s television station has also allowed him to become a participant with the National Broadcasting Society. In the Virginia community , Nicholas serves as a a peer tutor and a mentor for the youth at the church. Nicholas states “ I want to Thank Tom Joyner for sowing this seed into my life and I definitely will make it harvest.”
The Norfolk State University is located in Norfolk, Va., has 6,728 students, offering more than 50 degree programs at the undergraduate, master’s and doctoral levels. On its 134-acre campus, there are 35 buildings, including state-of-the-art technology centers, a 28,000-seat football stadium and an 8,000-seat basketball arena.
The Hercules Scholarship is named after Joyner’s father, the late Hercules Joyner, who was a strong supporter of higher education. To be a candidate for the scholarship, students must be male, attend a Foundation “School of the Month”, have a grade point average of at least 3.5, and be a campus leader involved in the community with a career goal toward making a difference in the quality of life for his race. The scholars each receive a scholarship grant of $1,500 that is paid directly to their school to help offset their college expenses.
