Hometown: Jonesboro, Georgia
Career goal: To become an ethnomusicologist, singer, and inspirational speaker
Motto: “Live life above the influence”
Congratulations to Christoph McFadden, a junior music major from Claflin University, for being this week’s Hercules scholar!
Christoph McFadden is a native of Atlanta, Georgia and currently a junior music major concentrating in voice at Claflin University. He has been a part of several music ensembles and has performed at various venues such as the Georgia Governor’s Mansion, South Carolina Governor’s Mansion, Carnegie Hall, and for President Jimmy Carter at the Jimmy Carter Library and Museum. Christoph also enjoys performing at local services and events in the Orangeburg and Atlanta areas. Aside from the performance arena, Christoph loves to give back to his community. He spends time volunteering in Orangeburg, at local schools, on campus, and is a proud Eagle Scout. At Claflin, Christoph is a Freshmen Orientation Leader, University 101 Class Peer Mentor, Member of the Claflin University Concert Choir (CUCC), CUCC Webmaster, and Student Ministry Leader. Most recently, he and three of his colleagues launched a student outreach ministry with the goal of encouraging, inspiring, and motivating his peers at Claflin and the surrounding schools. Last year, Christoph was named as a UNCF Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellow, a program that teaches research skills and fosters the next generation of Ph.D. holding academics. This coming semester, he is looking forward to continuing his current research project which analyzes the effect and the ways gospel music is secularized for various commercial purposes. In the future, Christoph hopes to attend graduate school to study Ethnomusicology and later travel as an active researcher, singer, and inspirational speaker. Those he looks up to include God and his parents: Christoph and Elaine McFadden, Sr.
His motto is “live life above the influence,” followed by one of his favorite scriptures 1 Corinthians 15:10 “But by the grace of God, I am what I am.” Christoph McFadden believes that music naturally taps into emotions and serves as a conduit through which lives can be transformed. Christoph has always believed in the importance of sincere kindness. Whether it’s through a friendly smile or a kind word, he has tried to make a difference in society by brightening the day of anyone he meets.
