(Augusta, GA)—Paine College is pleased to announce Marion Barnes ’57, as the 2013 Homecoming Parade Grand Marshall. The parade is slated for Saturday, February 9, 2013 at 11 a.m. The Homecoming Parade will begin downtown at Dyess Park and will end on Laney Walker Boulevard at Druid Park Avenue.
This year’s parade honors the 131st year of Paine College’s existence. The College is expecting a record number of alumni and friends to attend homecoming festivities, due to the completion of the Health Education Activities Learning (HEAL) Complex. For the first time in over a decade, Paine College will host its Homecoming basketball game on its home court.
Vendors, clubs, organizations, and businesses are invited to participate in the Homecoming parade and reserve a space for tailgating festivities.
About Marion Barnes:
Marion E. Barnes was born and raised in the Augusta area and is a proud member of the Class of 1950 of Lucy Craft Laney High School in Augusta, where he lettered in football. Barnes is a 1957 graduate of Paine College and was outstanding in both football and basketball. After receiving a degree in Science from Paine he continued his affiliation and loyal support to his alma mater as a member of the Paine College Alumni Association and a member as well as an inductee in the Paine College Athletic Hall of Fame (which he is a founding member). He was also inducted into the SIAC Athletic Hall of Fame in Birmingham, AL in 1994.
He came up through the ranks of the Richmond County School System as teacher, coach, counselor and Principal at Tubman Junior High and retiring as the principal of T. W. Josey Comprehensive High School after 19 years in that position – having been the longest serving principal at that school to date.
He has received numerous community service awards to include the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Citizen of the year, the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Citizen of the Year, the Emancipation Proclamation Celebration Citizen of the Year and the Wilbur P. Jones Award (GCAA). He is a life member of: Veterans of Foreign War, National Association of Educators, Georgia Association of Educators and Richmond County Association of Educators and the Optimist International.
He is the chairman of the EOA board of directors – where the homeless center was named in his honor, a member of the RCT credit union board, DFACS board member, the board of directors for the Georgia Community Action Association, the board of directors for the CSRA Housing and Development, Inc., member of the advisory board for the Laney-Walker Development, South Carolina State Alumni Association member, member of the Georgia Southern Alumni Association and the NAACP.
Currently he is serving in his 4th term as a trustee for the Richmond County Board of Education – having served as president twice.
He is a member of Bethel A. M. E. Church and has been married to the former Nancy Williams for 58 years. He is the father to Barry & M. Nanette; the grandfather of JerMichael, Rafael and Tameka; the surrogate grandfather to Layfette, DeMarcus and Nevin and the proud great-grandfather to Danielle & Tamia.
