CHARLOTTE, N.C. – January 7, 2014 – Johnson C. Smith University joins five Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the nation noted for sustainability efforts. An article published in the Huffington Post on Jan. 3 praises JCSU for “leading a comprehensive approach to campus-wide sustainability.” The article applauds the university for becoming “an aggressive partner with Charlotte’s environmental preservation goals.”
Among those goals is an effort to solve the food desert in Charlotte’s West End. The university is addressing this issue by growing tilapia and vegetables on an aquaponic farm and community garden on campus. The student-run project provides a source of fresh fish and produce for the community and local food banks.
The Huffington Post article also mentions the university’s Center for Renewable Energy, which will be located in a new Science Center under construction. In addition, “the university has worked on a revitalization project for Charlotte’s West End, bringing arts, dining and retail to the city’s Northwest corridor through the JCSU Mosaic Village,” the article states.
In addition to Johnson C. Smith University, the article also lists Spelman College, Paul Quinn College, Jackson State University and Virginia State University. The complete article may be viewed at
