Career goal: to become an entrepreneur

Congratulations to Lawson State Community College Hercules Scholar, Bertram Duff. The future entrepreneur plans to pursue his bachelor’s degree after graduating from community college. Bertram is a member of the Honors College, Phi Beta Lambda, and hopes to become a member of Phi Theta Kappa and the Student Government Association in the future.

In addition to his academics, Bertram participates in feeding the homeless and clothing drives in the Birmingham and Bessemer communities. Bertram pledges to help young men become better students and citizens and overcome adversity.

Bertram is most influenced by his maternal grandfather, Charlie Duff. His grandfather, Bertram says, was the only father figure in his life and taught him the importance of honesty, hard work and standing by your word. Although he took the unconventional path to college, Bertram says it was definitely worth it and he has become a stronger man because of it.

Bertram lives by the motto:
“Never look down on someone unless you’re helping them up.”
