Hampton University Receives 11 Nominations in 2017 HBCU Awards


Hampton University received 11 nominations in the 2017 HBCU Awards presented by the HBCU Digest. The 2017 HBCU Awards will be held at Washington, D.C.’s Gallup Building on July 14 at 7 p.m.

The HBCU Awards are the finale to the 2017 HBCU Executive Media Training Institute held from July 13-14. The Institute is designed to engage the national HBCU community in media literacy and development and will provide best practices in media culture building for HBCU communities from around the nation.

Finalists were selected from more than 175 nominations from HBCUs across the country.
The Hampton University finalists are:

HBCU of the Year – Hampton University

Male President of the Year – Dr. William R. Harvey

Female Alumnus of the Year – Rear Adm. Sylvia Trent-Adams, Acting U.S. Surgeon General

Male Student of the Year – Jordyn Hawkins-Rippie

Female Student of the Year – Aria Hill

Women’s Team of the Year – Hampton Women’s Basketball

Men’s Team of the Year – Hampton Men’s Basketball

Male Coach of the Year – David Six, Hampton University Women’s Basketball

Female Athlete of the Year – Malia Tate-DeFreitas, Hampton University Women’s Basketball

Best Student Organization – Service Spree

Best Fine Arts Program – Hampton University Dept. of Fine and Performing Arts
