October 7, 2016 – Fort Valley State University is providing emergency shelter over the next few days to about 200 students from Savannah State University.
FVSU President Dr. Paul Jones said the students who are being displaced due to Hurricane Matthew will be temporarily housed at FVSU’s Health and Physical Education Complex through Sunday, Oct. 9.

“We know the FVSU campus community will welcome these students from our sister institution with open arms and show them our Wildcat hospitality during this disaster relief effort,” Jones said of the evacuees, which also includes key Savannah State personnel. “During times like these, we are one family.”

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal on Thursday ordered a mandatory evacuation of six coastal Georgia counties due to the potential effects of Hurricane Matthew.

Savannah State University’s classes have been canceled until Monday, Oct. 10.

On Thursday, FVSU also activated its State Animal Facility for Emergencies or (SAFE) Center in response to Hurricane Matthew. The center is a 7,800 square-foot facility that provides pet owners a shelter for their animals during natural and man-made disasters. The center which opened in 2012, can house 105 dogs, 80 cats and 30 horses.

The SAFE Center is currently housing animals from the Savannah Animal Sanctuary, said Center Director George McCommon.

Savannah State University’s student relocation to FVSU is part of an existing emergency management agreement that includes providing evacuated students with lodging, dining services and other amenities, such as free wireless internet and extracurricular activities, said Ken Morgan, chief of FVSU’s Department of Campus Police and Safety and chair of the emergency management team.

Parents of impacted Savannah State University students are invited to call the FVSU Hotline for additional information at 478-825-4264.
