Major/ Class: Chemistry Pre- Med / Sophomore

Hassan, a sophomore at the Xavier University of Louisiana  was named the Tom Joyner Foundation “Hercules Scholar ” for this week.

Mr. Owens is originally from St. Louis, Missouri  and he currently holds a 3.53 GPA and is majoring in Chemistry Pre -Med at the Xavier University of Louisiana. After earning his degree at  XULA , he plans to complete pharmacy residency so that I can gain additional experience in the field before working as a pharmacy. He would also like to complete a second year of residency so that he can specialize in oncology.

His ultimate goal is to specialize in oncology because he is  interested by the progression of cancer and would like to play a vital role in finding a cure to all cancers.

On campus Hassan is a member of the Student National Pharmaceutical Association  and back home in St. Louis, he is a pharmacy technician at the Veteran Affairs Hospital. He is also a reoccurring writer for the school’s newspaper, a peer dean, and resident mentor for SOAR.

The most influential person in Hassan life is Ms. Alverta Smith. Ms. Smith was his health occupation teacher during his first year of high school.  Ms. Smith introduced me to another influential person in my life, a former student of hers who is a Xavier graduate, Dr. Player.  Dr. Player is the co-founder of BEST, which is a partnership between Barnes Jewish Hospital, Express Scripts, and St. Louis College of Pharmacy whose mission is to prepare and expose student to careers in healthcare with an emphasis in pharmacy.   I aspire to be just as successful as them. I thank Dr. Player and Ms. Smith because they both have played a vital role in my life.

He lives by the quote  “to let go, and let God” #XULA
