Tom Joyner Foundation and Denny’s Announce Winners of
2015 Hungry for Education Scholarship
Foundation, Denny’s are partners in the Hungry for Education Scholarship Program, awarding outstanding students with $30,000 in scholarships
DALLAS (Feb. 10, 2015) – The Tom Joyner Foundation and Denny’s Corporation (NASDAQ: DENN), franchisor and operator of one of America’s largest full-service restaurant chains, today announced the 12 winners of the 2015 Hungry for Education Scholarship Program, a partnership between the two organizations that supports students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
Students from HBCUs around the country submitted 250 to 500 word essays describing their most memorable community service or activity to combat hunger. The winners’ schools and hometowns are:
Kiana Cole, junior, Howard University, from Pine Bluff, Ark.
Ashley Griggs, junior, Delaware State University, from Wilmington, Del.
Jarrett Harper, junior, Fisk University, from Hawaiian Gardens, Calif.
Trevor Holmes, freshman, Clark Atlanta University, from Nashville, Tenn.
Teylor Isome, freshman, Dillard University, from Cincinnati, Ohio
Paige Matthews, freshman, Bennett College, from Powder Spring, Ga.
Tiffany Provost-Holloway, senior, Fayetteville State University, from Concord, N.C.
Jimmitriv Roberson, freshman, Grambling State University, from Arcadia, La.
Alexander Smith,sophomore, Langston University, from Luther, Okla.
Kadijah Templeton, junior, Wiley College, from Longview, Texas
Vester Waters, junior, Mississippi Valley State University, from Detroit, Mich.
Shanay Wise, sophomore, Paul Quinn College, from Dallas, Texas
“I’m very impressed with each of these students’ proposals,” said Thomas Joyner Jr., president and chief executive officer of the Foundation. “They’ve shown that you can do really well in your classes – and find ways to give back to the community.”
April Kelly-Drummond, Denny’s director of corporate diversity and community affairs, said Denny’s remains committed to helping students succeed.

Each scholarship recipient shared their stories about how they have tried to make a difference. For example, Kiana Cole at Howard created the PAPERBAG20 service project where she and other students prepare bag lunches that they hand out to homeless individuals. Shanay Wise of Paul Quinn College in Dallas led a team of volunteers to make a homemade, healthy Thanksgiving dinner for a local underserved families and she helped manage a community garden to ensure the community had access to fresh vegetables. Tiffany Provost-Holloway at Fayetteville State collected gift cards for the homeless and Alexander Smith at Langston cooks and serves food for his community several times a week.
