Black Music Month: Stillman College’s Choir

The Stillman College Concert Choir under the direction of Mrs. Jocqueline K. Richardson, is a choral ensemble comprised of students who are music and non-music majors. The Choir’s repertoire consists of a variety of sacred and secular choral literature from the Renaissance to the Contemporary periods in music history.  The Concert Choir performs at college events, local and regional churches and special events throughout the academic year. The two major on-campus concerts are the Homecoming Spirituals/Gospel Concert and the Annual Christmas Candlelight Concert, both of which bring visitors from Mississippi, North Alabama, South Alabama, as well as alumni from across the United States. The Choir serves as an ambassador of Stillman College. Each spring semester, the Choir embarks on a tour presenting concerts at churches and schools along a designated route.

The Stillman College Concert Choir is open to all interested students through an audition process that includes selections chosen from standard vocal repertoire as defined by the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) and the Alabama Vocal Association (AVA).

The Stillman Singers serve as the touring ensemble of the Stillman College Choir.  Comprised of approximately 20-25 students, the Stillman Singers are selected through a more rigorous audition process.

The choir has performed in several major cities, including San Francisco, New York, Chicago, Houston, Nashville, and in Tuscaloosa’s sister city Schorndorf, Germany.
