Apollo supercomputer comes to UAPB

UAPB the first HBCU in Arkansas, tenth in the nation with a supercomputer

PINE BLUFF, Ark. – Scientific discovery today depends as never before upon ease of access to data, associated sophisticated tools and applications to enable research and education. Researchers who once worked in local, isolated laboratories now collaborate routinely and on a global scale. Specialized instruments that were spread across multiple locations can now fit into a single lab connected via cyberinfrastructure network resources. Going forward, such networks are likely to evolve to become “data mediums” where data can be positioned to serve an ever-changing tool for scientific discovery.

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) has strengthened its research efforts with the acquisition of an Apollo cluster/supercomputer, making it the only HBCU within Arkansas and one of only ten HBCUs in the United States with a supercomputer on campus. Funded by the Defense University Research Instrumentation Program of the U.S. Department of Defense, the cluster and visualization instrumentations will enhance existing research activities currently funded at the institution to combine a shared facility that will invigorate a wide range of modeling and analysis projects across multiple disciplines. This will enable new research and education activities and provide training opportunities to a minority student population by exposing a new generation of young scientists to numerous research facets in the exciting area of high-performance computing.

The resource will be managed by the Department of Mathematical and Computer Sciences at UAPB in collaboration with the Departments of Agriculture, Biology (Biotechnology Research group), Chemistry and Physics (Nanosciences Research group) and Mathematics and Computer Sciences (Data Analytics Research/CyberSecurity group). The resource will also offer the city of Pine Bluff and its population unique opportunities to engage in tangible data-intensive computing activities while gaining exposure to the complex discipline of data-oriented scientific discovery.
