Alumni Spotlight – Marvin White

Wilberforce University

Wilberforce alumnus and 2012 Alumni Excellence Award recipient Marvin L. White is gaining good reviews in his adopted hometown of Indianapolis, Indiana. White, a 1984 accounting graduate of Wilberforce University, was named CFO of the Year by the Indianapolis Business Journal (IBJ) in 2011. “Thanks to Marvin White’s financial discipline, St. Vincent Health was able to move forward with its capital projects while other health systems had to discontinue or postpone theirs,” wrote Jon White, an official at Indianapolis-based St. Vincent Health, who nominated White for the honor.

White, who also holds a master’s degree in finance, is system vice-president and chief financial officer for St. Vincent Health. His responsibilities include finance, material management, accounting, patient financial services, and managed care for all 19 St. Vincent Health ministries as well as 36 joint ventures.

One of the successful programs theJacksonville,Floridanative implemented was one for patient support. “We have a goal to heal them clinically but not harm them financially,” White said. Two years ago, according to the IBJ, he spearheaded a new patient-billing plan after finding that many patients simply could not afford to pay their hospital bills on time. The new program extends payment periods for customers in need for up to six years, without fees or interest. Over the long term, bold initiatives like these will help the not-for-profit organization weather the rough economic times.

“We knew our patients were good Americans but were going through tough times,” White said. “[The program] was a financial hit to the company, but it was the right thing to do.”

White joinedSt. Vincentin 2008 after working for some of the country’s largest companies, including Indianapolis-based Eli Lilly and Co., Michigan-based General Motors Corp., California-based Hewlett-Packard Co. and the former Amoco Corp. But it is at St. Vincent Health where he feels most at home.

“In this role, it’s pretty clear I’m having an impact,” White said, “I help people have dignity in paying their bills. That’s a good feeling.”

White lives in theIndianapolisarea with his wife Gennifer, a daughter and a son. His favorite pastime sport is playing golf.
