Distinguished Tigers include: Dr. Alvin Crawford, the first African American to graduate from the University of Tennessee – College of Medicine; Dr. Catana Starks, the first female head coach of an NCAA Division I men’s golf team; Ralph Boston, Olympic athlete, three time medal winning long jumper; and Wilma Rudolph, the first American woman to win three gold medals in a single Olympics.

The Tennessee State University Foundation is the official charitable organization authorized to accept private contributions for Tennessee State University. Since 1970, the 501 c 3 nonprofit has been committed to its mission of promoting and supporting literary, scientific, educational, scholarship, research, charitable and development purposes and goals at the University.
