The University of Virgin Islands National Alumni Association recognized two students for their outstanding academic work.
UVI and the scholars were featured on the Tom Joyner Morning Show today. Each thanked UVI and the Foundation for the support they received to get an education.”
“It’s a big honor to become a Tom Joyner scholar,” said Tobias Ortega-Knight, majoring in computational biology. “There have been a number of alumni helping me pursue my dream.”
Latoya Benjamin, sophomore, majoring in elementary education, said, “I want to give back to my community because I notice that many of our teachers here lack the degrees to continue teaching, I want to further and get highest degree I possibly can. I want to nurture and bring up the next generation. That’s been my dream since I was a child. … To all of those who donate, you make a tremendous difference to every student in need. My mother lost her job earlier this year, and I wondered how I would finish school.”
Benjamin added, “It makes you believe that someone out there wants to help you.”
