HBCU’s Students, Alumni Compete in 2012 Summer Olympics
The 2012 Summer Olympic Games featured the talents of several HBCUs alumni. Here’s a summary of the results:
The Medal Winners
Chris Brown, Norfolk State University, Norfolk, Va., representing the Bahamas, won a Gold Medal in the Men’s 4×400 Relay.
Michael Tinsley, Jackson State University, Jackson, Miss., representing the United States, won a Silver Medal in the Men’s 400m hurdles.
Francena McCorory, Hampton University, Hampton, Va., representing the United States, won a Gold Medal in the Women’s 4x400m Final.
Kellie Wells, Hampton University, Hampton, Va., representing the United States, won a Bronze Medal in the Women’s 100m Hurdles Final.
Other Competitors
Ramon Gittens, St. Augustine’s College, Raleigh, N.C., representing Barbados, finished sixth in the first round of the Men’s 100 meter.
Leford Green, Johnson C. Smith College, Charlotte, N.C., representing Jamaica, finished 7th in the Men’s 400m Hurdles final.
Lenora Guion-Firmin, University of Maryland-Eastern Shore,Princess Anne, Md., representing France, did not run.
Semoy Hackett, Lincoln University, Lincoln, Mo., representing Trinidad and Tabago, finished eight in the Women’s 200m Final.
Dane Hyatt, St. Augustine’s College, Raleigh, N.C., representing Jamaica, finished 19th in the Men’s 400m semifinals.
Lavonne Idlette, Florida A&M University, Tallahassee, Fla., representing the Dominican Republic, finished sixth in the first round of the Women’s 100m Hurdles.
Amara Jones, Savannah State University, Savannah, Ga., representing the Bahamas, did not run.
Anaso Jododwana, Jackson State University, Jackson, Miss., representing South Africa, finished eight in the Mens 200m Final.
Allison Randall, Morgan State University, Baltimore, Md., representing Jamaica, finished 16th in the Women’s Discus Throw, Qualification Round.
Chandra Sturrup, Norfolk State University, Norfolk, Va., representing the Bahamas, finished sixth in Round 1 of the Women’s 4x100m Relay.
Shermaine Williams, Johnson C. Smith University, Charlotte, N.C., representing Jamaica, finished third in the Women’s 100m Hurdles Semifinals.
