TUSKEGEE, Ala. (January 17, 2014) — Tuskegee University’s very own Marching Crimson Piper band has been selected to play in the 2014 Reese’s Senior Bowl.  The bowl, which is in its 65th year of existence, will be played in Ladd-Peebles stadium located in Mobile, Ala. onJan. 25. The game starts at 3 p.m. CST and will be nationally televised on the NFL Network. The Senior Bowl, according to its official website, is the nation’s most unique football game at the collegiate level. The event showcases the nation’s top senior collegiate football players and NFL draft prospects. Players are placed on teams representing the North and South. Since its first game in 1950 at the Jacksonville, Florida Gator Bowl, the game has been played on the weekend prior to the Super Bowl.

The formal invitation to participate in this event was received after a correspondence between the band director, Warren L. Duncan, and Christopher Morgan, the executive director of the Senior Bowl. This will be the first time that the Marching Crimson Piper Band will be participating in this event.

“Its good visibility for the university, as a whole, when you go out and do positive things,” Duncan said. “It attracts students, it makes us viable.”

The Marching Crimson Piper Band is one of the oldest HBCU marching bands. For over 100 years, the band and its members, also known as the “Pipers”, have become known for their unique marching style, powerful music arrangements, intricate dance steps and quality presentations. The band has been practicing tirelessly for this event, and although it is a performance outside of the regular schedule, current band members are still excited about what this performance means for the band program at Tuskegee.

Freshman saxophonist Aleeya Sanders, an architect major from Sacramento, Calif., stated, “I feel good about it because it’s my first year here in the marching band and to be able to go to something like the Senior Bowl is a good experience.”

Other bandsmen felt that it would be a great recruiting tool for the band program, potentially helping to bring in new members from across the country.

“This is a milestone that, I’m pretty sure, no one in our program would ever expect to experience.” said Ormond Castle, a senior trombone player majoring in electrical engineering from Decatur, Ga. “Just to be able to be around NFL coaches and around all of these important people should make you feel honored and grateful. Not only because they thought of you, but that God put this blessing in front of us to just go out here and be able to be seen.”
