Click here to make a donation to Johnson C. Smith. The Tom Joyner Foundation is recognizing Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, N.C. as the February 2014 School of the Month.

The foundation, formed by the nationally syndicated radio personality, chose Johnson C. Smith as part of its on-going effort to assist these institutions in broadening and strengthening their efforts to raise money to help keep students attending HBCUs.

As one of the Tom Joyner Foundation ‘Schools of the Month’, each school will be promoted by the Tom Joyner Morning Show and receive those funds raised from listeners, alumni and other interested parties that month. The show, aired in 115 markets around the country, reaches nearly eight million listeners every week.

Johnson C. Smith University, referred to as ‘Charlotte’s Premier Independent Urban University’, was founded in 1867. This private, liberal arts university prides itself on HBCU traditions and a vision for diversity.

Students from various backgrounds are exposed to 22 fields of study, an 11:1 student/faculty ratio, and an active campus life that includes 60 total organizations, 9 fraternities and sororities, and 15 NCAA Division II sports teams. This campus environment enables students to explore and grow in all aspects of life and develop a sense of social responsibility.

Special recognitions for the university include being ranked several times by U.S. News and World Report as one of the best comprehensive colleges in the South, named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Roll Honor Roll (2013, 2012, 2011, 2010), and Biddle Memorial Hall, located at the center of the campus, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. 

Today, Johnson C. Smith continues to evolve into a 21st century university committed to fostering its long legacy of producing compassionate and forward-thinking leaders.

The Foundation’s ‘Schools of the Month’ for the rest of the year are as follows: March – Claflin University, Orangeburg,SC; April – Langston University Langston, OK; May – Central State University, Wilberforce, OH; June- Texas Southern University, Houston, TX; July- Huston-Tillotson, Austin, TX; August – Clark Atlanta University, Atlanta,GA; September- Norfolk State University, Norfolk, VA; October- Alabama State University, Montgomery, AL; November – Southern University and A&M College, Baton Rouge, LA.
