The Tom Joyner Foundation is recognizing Florida Memorial University in Miami Gardens, FL as the April 2013 School of the Month.
The foundation, formed by the nationally syndicated radio personality, chose Florida Memorial as part of its on-going effort to assist these institutions in broadening and strengthening their efforts to raise money to help keep students attending HBCUs.
As one of the Tom Joyner Foundation ‘Schools of the Month’, each school will be promoted by the Tom Joyner Morning Show and receive those funds raised from listeners, alumni and other interested parties that month. The show, aired in 115 markets around the country, reaches nearly eight million listeners every week.
Florida Memorial University is the only Historically Black College or University (HBCU) in Miami, Florida. Florida Memorial is the product of two mergers: Florida Baptist Institute (1879) and the Florida Baptist Academy (1892).
The University was established by, and remains closely affiliated with, the Baptist Church; however, its motto, “Leadership, Character, and Service” emphasizes Christian values. The university’s founders, Rev. J.N. Stokes, Sr., Rev, Dr. J.L. Fish, Rev. Dr. Matthew Gilbert and Miss Sarah A. Blocker paved the way with their vision and insight.
Since 1879, Florida Memorial has established itself as a culturally diverse institution that transforms lives as well as helps to create a future for people from many races, ethnicities, countries, religions, and socio-economic backgrounds.
Today, Florida Memorial offers 41 undergraduate degree programs and 4 master’s programs. As part of the university’s mission, programs meet the highest standards in academia while “instilling in students the importance of becoming global citizens through life-long learning, leadership, character, and service which will enhance their lives and the lives of others.”
