FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (July 6, 2015) – Fayetteville State University’s (FSU) Department of Nursing has been ranked the No. 2 program in the Eastern and Southeastern Region and best among University of North Carolina System schools by NurseJournal.org.

Determining the Rankings

To determine the rankings, NurseJournal.org evaluated 1,189 nursing programs and selected 20 metrics, sorting them into five categories: quality, affordability, convenience, satisfaction, and value. Out of a possible 130 points, FSU received 109.42. The No. 1 ranked program received 109.59 points.

“This is indeed great news for the Fayetteville State University Department of Nursing,” said FSU Chancellor James A. Anderson. This recognition by NurseJournal.org is a seal of approval that designates the FSU Department of Nursing as one of the best in the country. A tremendous amount of work went into rebuilding our program and making it one of which we all could be proud. I am pleased that nursing agencies are recognizing the hard work of our department chair, faculty, staff, and students.”

FSU’s pre-licensure nursing program

FSU’s 2014 graduates of the pre-licensure nursing program earned a 100% pass rate on the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX), the test required for entry into the nursing profession. These graduates are the first to complete FSU’s revamped pre-licensure nursing program that has undergone multiple improvements in recent years.

In 2009, Chancellor Anderson made the decision to close the pre-licensure program in response to low NCLEX pass rates. From 2009-2013, while admitting no new students into the program, FSU selected a new department chair, employed new faculty, and completely overhauled program requirements and curriculum. The RN–BSN program continued to exist during this time.

In 2011, the North Carolina Board of Nursing approved the revised curriculum and authorized FSU to admit new students beginning in January 2013. Of the students who were originally admitted, 15 completed bachelor’s degrees in December 2014. To practice nursing, however, these graduates must earn a passing score on the NCLEX. All 15 passed the exam upon their first effort.

NCLEX graduates

Pass rates of graduates on the NCLEX are generally regarded as the most important measure of nursing program quality. According to the NC Board of Nursing website, the 2014 national pass rate for bachelor’s degree students is 84% and 89% for North Carolina graduates. FSU was one of only two North Carolina universities with a perfect NCLEX pass rate in 2014.
