The women of Delta Sigma Theta will be celebrating their Centennial anniversary in a very big way. Based on reports, the sorority will be opening up a school in Haiti. The purpose is to provide for cleaner facilities and a better education for the children of Haiti. Here’s what Delta Sigma Theta National President, Cynthia M.A Butler McIntire had to say: “The celebrations planned throughout our centennial year have not deterred us from doing what we were called to do – to serve,” said Delta Sigma Theta’s national president, Cynthia M. A. Butler-McIntyre. “Although we no longer see the images of Haiti in the news, the women of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority have not forgotten the devastated faces of our Haitian brothers and sisters after the earthquake three years ago.”

Here is a Hercules Scholar update featuring Tyrone Aaron, a Hercules Scholarship recipient from our November 2012 School of the Month, Livingstone College.

How did the scholarship help?

It helped a bunch. All of my expenses weren’t covered by my Presidential Scholarship. I was also able to pledge Omega Psi Phi. It was more of a blessing within a blessing.

What are your plans for the rest of your tenure at Livingstone?

I plan to graduate this upcoming May and continue on. I have obtained a summer internship. I will be the Assistant Director of the Bridge Program. The Bridge Program is geared towards high school and college students. 100 students will come to campus for 6 weeks and participate in college preparatory classes.

The Tom Joyner Foundation /Denny’s Hungry for Education Scholarship Program is awarding deserving ten, $2,500 scholarships to students who currently attend the following HBCUs:

Allen University, Columbia, S.C.

Benedict College, Columbia, S.C.

Voorhees College, Denmark, S.C.

Howard University, Washington, DC

Florida A&M University, Tallahassee, Fla.

Florida Memorial University, Miami, Fla.

Paul Quinn College, Dallas, Texas

PrairieView A&M University, Prairie View, Texas

Texas Southern University, Houston, Texas

Wiley College, Marshall, Texas

We know how important it is for schools across the country to identify and remove barriers that prevent students from accessing the nutrition and higher educational opportunities they need in order to learn and succeed.

Currently, according to No Kid Hungry, 22% of U.S. children under age 18 live in poverty, struggling every day with hunger that holds them back from striving to do their best in school. That’s why we have partnered with Denny’s Hungry for Education campaign, a program awarding over $50,000 in scholarships and special incentives to high school and college students for their innovative ideas on childhood hunger.

Here’s How It Works

You can apply for a $2,500 Hungry for Education scholarship at www.dennyshungryforeducation.com.

Click on the “apply now” button on the “Hungry for Education” homepage to begin the application process. Upon completion of the form in Step 1, students will receive a 20% off Denny’s coupon plus a free breakfast coupon on their birthday and automatically have their school registered for the grand prize.

Write a 500-word essay on how Denny’s can impact childhood hunger in the United States.

If there are any questions, please email us at hungryforeducation@dennys.com.

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – The Hampton University softball team won the 2013 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament championship on Saturday at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex after splitting two games with Norfolk State.

The Lady Pirates won their first MEAC title since 1996.

In beating the Spartans 7-3 in the second game, the Lady Pirates (34-24) won their 15th game in their last 18 tries.

Head coach Trena Peel was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Coach. Freshman <dfn>Taylor McCoy (Riverview, Fla.)</dfn> was named Most Outstanding Performer, and she was named to the All-Tournament Team along with junior <dfn>Margaret Wilkins (Tustin, Calif.)</dfn> and sophomore <dfn>Jailynn Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va.)</dfn>.

Hampton broke out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the second game, loading the bases with nobody out before senior <dfn>Nina Ferguson (Plymouth, Minn.)</dfn> singled to left center field to bring in two runs. After a Spartans pitching change, McCoy scored when sophomore <dfn>Kerissa Burruel (Phoenix, Ariz.)</dfn> reached on a fielder’s choice.

Norfolk State scored a run in the top of the fourth, cutting Hampton’s lead to 3-1 after Kathy Cortez scored on an error.

The Lady Pirates answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, starting with a leadoff home run to center field from senior <dfn>Shine Huwe (Green Bay, Wisc.)</dfn> – her fourth of the season. Freshman <dfn>Diamond Ponds (Riverside, Calif.)</dfn> later scored on an error to put Hampton up 5-1.

McCoy later added an RBI single to give the Lady Pirates a 6-1 lead.

Huwe then doubled to center field in the bottom of the fifth, scoring senior <dfn>Carla Trimble (Riverside, Calif.)</dfn> to give Hampton a 7-1 lead.

The Spartans rallied in the top of the seventh inning, loading the bases and pushing across two unearned runs to cut Hampton’s lead to 7-3. But with the bases loaded and two outs, Langlois got Cortez to pop out to shortstop to end the game and clinch the title.

Langlois led the way at the plate in the second game, going 3-for-4, while Huwe and Wilkins each added two hits. Sophomore <dfn>Bianca Vallejo (Chandler, Ariz.)</dfn> scored two runs, and Ferguson and Huwe each drove in two runs.

Langlois went the distance in the circle, picking up her sixth win of the season. She scattered six hits and gave up three runs, all unearned. Langlois also struck out two batters.

Norfolk State (31-22) won the first game 10-3, forcing another contest.

The Spartans struck first with two runs in the top of the first inning, taking a 2-0 lead following an RBI single from Whitney Williams and an RBI double from MEAC Player of the Year Haley Ward.

Hampton got on the board in the bottom of the third, when Wilkins to left center field to bring home Trimble and cut Norfolk State’s lead to 2-1.

Norfolk State pushed across five runs in the top of the fifth, taking a 7-1 lead. The inning included a pair of two-run singles, from Cortez and Robyn Mitchell.

The Lady Pirates cut the lead to 7-2 in the bottom of the inning, when Vallejo scored on a fielding error.

But the Spartans scored again in the top of the sixth to take an 8-2 lead, and Hampton answered in the bottom of the sixth. Langlois reached base on a single before advancing to third, then she scored on a groundout from Ferguson.

Williams singled home two runs in the seventh to give Norfolk State a 10-3 lead and force another game.

The Lady Pirates were held to just four hits in the first game.

In introductory remarks, Rochon told the audience that the university’s past is deeply rooted in agricultural studies. He also said agriculture still remains very much relevant in the New Millennium.

“By 2050, the world’s population is expected to surpass nine billion. In order to prepare for this growth, we must be dedicated to environmental sustainability, food security and innovative research,” Rochon said. “We are determined that Tuskegee graduates will be prepared to be on the frontlines of those issues.”

Vilsack: “Seek common ground.”

In his keynote address, Vilsack said America and the world have numerous issues in need of resolutions such as climate change food security. In order to address those issues, Vilsack urged the graduates not to cling to rigid positions, but to always try to see the perspective of the “murky middle.”

“The future problem solvers, and that is what you have been trained to be, seek common ground and common purpose,” Vilsack said.

He went on to explain that he and everyone assembled wanted all of the graduates to be successful, but urged them to be mindful of those who contributed to their success. As they move forward, Vilsack said graduates must also remember that there are problems ahead.

“I want you to accept the challenge of your time,” Vilsack said. “Don’t be afraid to seek compromise, embrace the middle, and embrace the compromise.”

After the keynote address, Rochon conferred upon Vilsack an honorary Doctor of Laws degree, honoris causa. Rochon was assisted by Luther S. Williams, provost and executive vice president and retired Maj. Gen. Charles E. Williams, chair of the Tuskegee University Board of Trustees.

New science building opened

May 10, Vilsack helped to open the first new science building on the university’s campus in 80 years. Vilsack, Rochon. Marc H. Morial, president and CEO of the National Urban League, and several representatives from the university community cut the ribbon for James Henry Meriwether Henderson Hall. The new facility will house state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories to support science and agricultural education programs.

James H.M. Henderson was a Tuskegee professor and administrator who spent more than 50 years at the university. He came to Tuskegee in 1945 and taught botany and plant physiology. He also served as head of the biology department, chair of the Division of Natural Sciences and director of the Carver Research Foundation.

“This building speaks to a man who made a commitment to education,” Vilsack said at the ribbon cutting ceremony. “There is no greater gift.”
